Abdellah Outkhelf Addi, from Saica Natur Catalunya - Zona Franca, wins the Fourth Edition of the Saica Group Health & Safety Award

The award, a €5,000 donation to an NGO, recognises outstanding best practices in occupational health and safety.

Four runners‑up prizes, each valued at €2,500 and also donated to NGOs, were awarded to employees from Saica Natur Aragón, Saica Paper Partington, Saica Pack Dublin and Saica Flex Enniskillen.

Abdellah Outkhelf Addi, Service Operator at Saica Natur Catalunya – Zona Franca, has been named winner of the fourth edition of the Saica Group Health & Safety Award, presented on Thursday at the Group’s corporate headquarters in Zaragoza. The award recognises outstanding initiatives and best practices in occupational health and safety across the organisation. The ceremony coincided with the celebration of World Day for Safety and Health at Work, held annually on 28 April. On this occasion, the jury also recognised runners‑up for their exemplary contributions to health and safety at Saica Natur Aragón, Saica Paper Partington, Saica Pack Dublin and Saica Flex Enniskillen.

The jury highlighted Abdellah Outkhelf Addi’s strong commitment, proactive attitude and consistent ability to enhance safety in all the environments in which he works. Throughout his career, he has driven significant improvements in processes, work organisation and risk prevention, particularly in settings with limited direct supervision. The Chair and CEO of the Saica Group, Susana Alejandro, presented him with a €5,000 cheque, which—under the terms of the award—he has chosen to donate to the Red Cross.

The runners-up, each receiving a cheque for €2,500, were:

- the Steering Committee of Saica Natur Aragón, for its initiative “Digital validation and verification of understanding of safety regulations for external drivers.” This initiative ensures that external drivers understand safety rules more effectively and in a more accessible way prior to entering the plant, replacing the former paper-based model. The donation will be made to Educo.

- James Clay, of Saica Paper UK, in Partington, for his initiative to redesign the silo unloading process and eliminate critical risks, demonstrating how an operational challenge can be transformed into a high-impact safety solution through engineering. The donation will go to Save the Children.

- Billy Perry, Robert Rogers and Jack Duffy of Saica Pack Dublin, for their initiative to reduce interactions between vehicles and pedestrians by installing AI-powered cameras that detect hazardous situations in real time and activate preventive measures before incidents occur. The donation will be made to UNICEF.

- Karina Shumova, from Saica Flex Enniskillen, for her initiative to safely isolate hot work by creating a dedicated outdoor safety zone. This solution enables such activities to be carried out under safer conditions, reducing the risk of ignition and improving control over work performed by maintenance teams and contractors. The donation will be made to Médecins Sans Frontières.

This year’s finalists were:

Norberto González, from Saica Natur Catalonia; Alfredo Lidón, José Luis García and Alejandro Priego, from Saica Paper Zaragoza; the Health and Safety Induction Training Development Team at Saica Paper France; the Maintenance Department at Saica Pack Montsûrs; Richard Bennett, Mark Pearson and Chris Taylor, from Saica Pack Wigan; David Nicolau, from Saica Flex Zaragoza; and Laila Mourzak, Adrien Marchal, Romuald Peters, Frederic Cesarini, Donato Lorusso and Benjamin Muhlheim, from Saica Flex Luxembourg.

The event was hosted by Óscar Per, Group Health & Safety Director, and opened by Enrique de Yraolagoitia, Managing Director of the Saica Group. He congratulated the award recipients and stressed that “it is the individuals and teams themselves who nominate and recognise the work of their colleagues. This approach strengthens our collective commitment and clearly shows that safety is not the responsibility of a few, but a responsibility shared by all.”

In her closing remarks, President and CEO Susana Alejandro underlined that “at Saica, health and safety are not a one‑off objective. They are an ongoing journey, a shared responsibility and a fundamental pillar of our company.” She concluded: “Today, we are not just celebrating major projects—we are celebrating a way of working that defines who we are as a Group.”
