Design Centre, commercialising creativity

“I had the pleasure of visiting the Saica Flex innovation centre a few months ago in April. It was encouraging to see our packaging suppliers invest in the necessary areas to guarantee their ideas and capabilities are up to date. Although it is in a competitive category, the facilities built will no doubt give Saica Flex the right method and tools to get its clients exhaustively involved. I am anxious to collaborate with Saica Flex and create some efficient solutions for our clients and colleagues for the future.”

Raymond Li,
Product Packaging Procurement Manager,
Tesco

The next step in the company’s growth was the development of a design centre dedicated to understanding Saica Flex client needs and consumer requirements when developing packaging materials and formats. The move from Haydock in 2015 to new facilities in Wigan allowed us the opportunity to enjoy more than 460 squared metres of undeveloped open offices which are perfect for transforming into an emotional place for innovation that offers the group added value. Our design centre is completely equipped with:

  • A large-format Roland UV inkjet printer and a Zund cutting table to quickly create prototypes in multiple format substrates which include cardboard, film and labels, among others.

  • A creative and design centre for works of art and 3D conceptualisation (nicknamed the oval office): the Think Tanks room features a large-size blackboard to develop ideas and debate trends and market intelligence along with break and recreation areas to inspire creativity.

  • There’s also a technical bench with portable atmosphere testing equipment, useful life testing equipment a portable Verivide lightbox and a Xrite IO table for colour management and calibration.

  • A main meeting room includes an interactive 65-inch touchscreen monitor and complete video-conference systems.

  • The technical team has a 170 inch Full HD presentation screen with lounge furnishings and stools for large-size presentations, 3D changes and videos of the manufacturing site.

The design centre has already gathered the operations team from the United Kingdom centre to begin developing a culture where we think about the future of packaging, the initial concept of why, how and for whom, and to use a language and methodology that revolve around circular manufacturing processes, recycling and renewable technologies.
